St.Giles is one step closer to realising a long-term dream of developing a community health precinct at their Newstead site after regaining the title to the old Newstead Heights Primary School which adjoins the property next door to their Amy Road facility.

As part of this planning process, St.Giles is calling on members of the community to offer their own thoughts and suggestions as to what health and community services they would like to see included at an expanded facility.

Chief Executive Officer Honni Pitt, Profile and Engagement General Manager Danielle Blewett and former employee Meryl Hudson cut the cake in Launceston to mark the news.

The handover of the old Newstead Heights School from the State Government includes the buildings and land, which will need refurbishing to be transformed into a multi-disciplinary community health hub, able to service the nearby aged care homes as well as the Northern Tasmanian community more broadly.

“St.Giles was started 85 years ago by members of the community looking to give, and this is our opportunity to give back to the community that has supported our participants and staff for so long,” St.Giles Chief Executive Officer Honni Pitt said.

“Initial plans for the development could include a sub-acute medical facility, mother and baby unit, disability learning and lifestyle  hub and a complete overhaul of the hydrotherapy pool.

Experienced Launceston architects 6ty have been engaged to develop concept plans for the site.

“We’ve had preliminary discussions with a number of other parties who can see the benefit in locating their healthcare services alongside St.Giles and the other providers here in the heart of Newstead.

“We are also calling on members of the community to offer their own thoughts and suggestions as to what services they would like to see included in the development and are encouraged to contact the organisation via the community@stgiles.org.au email address.”

The redevelopment will enable the organisation to further deliver on their mission of ‘enabling people to thrive.’ The land at 65A Amy Road was an integral part of St.Giles footprint in Launceston for many years while St.Giles provided education services to children living with disability.
