The primary goal of Occupational Therapy is to enable people with a physical, mental or developmental condition to participate in the activities of everyday life. They may need help with the development of play skills, motor skills, handwriting, or simply self care skills (such as toileting, dressing and washing). Instead of focusing on physical evaluations, Occupational Therapists employ a more holistic approach of social, economic, and biological reasons behind someone’s symptoms, borrowed from disciplines like nursing, psychiatry, rehabilitation, self-help, orthopaedics, and social work.
We look at adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client/family to encourage daily activities, particularly those that are meaningful to that individual. One way to look at it is, to one person the occupation of “shopping” feels like “a real chore”, to another it’s “fun”, to yet another it’s “a chance to relax”. We focus on family and person-centred treatment programs that pinpoint and target the progress primarily towards an individual’s goals and motivations.
It’s easy to visit us at StGiles as you don’t generally need a referral from a GP to be treated by one of our Occupational Therapists. We offer screening, comprehensive assessment, consultative services, parent/carer education sessions, individual therapy and group therapy options, prescription of special needs equipment and even training for other professionals.
StGiles offers both public and private Occupational Therapy services.
