Initial Assessment

What will parents be asked to do?

During the intake process, our social worker or your child’s key worker will work with you to complete some assessment surveys about your child and family. 

The assessments include:

  • History Taking Form – this form provides us with information about your child’s medical and intervention history and helps us to understand what other supports he/she is accessing.
  • Social Communication Questionnaire – this short survey provides us with verification of your child’s ASD signs and symptoms. The results of this assessment do not influence your child’s eligibility for the centre.
  • Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale – this survey asks questions about your child’s development and behaviour to give us an understanding of where to target our intervention program.
  • Parent Measures (Quality of Life in Autism Scale and Parenting Stress Index) – these surveys help us to understand about your feelings about your role as the parent of a child with ASD. 
  • Activity and Participation Questionnaire – this survey provides us with information about your participate in employment/education and social participation. This helps us understand how we may be able to help you and to see how the ASELCC assists you in the longer term.

What will your child be asked to do?

During their usual program time, your key worker will arrange a session or sessions to complete assessments with your child on his/her own. These assessments will provide vital information to help staff to match the program to your child’s specific strengths and needs. 

The assessments include:

  • Mullen Scales of Early Learning – this assessment provides a standardised assessment of your child’s language, motor and perceptual abilities which will assist us in determining the priorities for the intervention program.  This assessment will usually be conducted by the centre’s psychologist.
  • Autism Diagnostic Observational Scale – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) – this assessment involves a play based assessment with an ADOS trained member of staff (Sarah Green or Kathryn Fordyce).  You may be asked to stay with your child during the assessment.  The assessment provides us with a measure of autism symptoms which helps us determine if further referrals are necessary and give us a baseline of your child’s behavioural profile.
  •  Speech Pathology Assessment – your child’s speech pathologist will undertake an assessment of your child’s communication skills.  This will include the Preschool Language Scale -5th Edition and observations of your child in the centre but may also include other formal assessments or checklists/surveys for you to complete depending on your child.  Your speech pathologist will explain this in more detail.
  • Occupational Therapy Assessment – your child’s occupational therapist may also undertake an assessment of your child.  Again this assessment will vary from child to child but will likely involve an assessment of your child’s sensory needs, daily living skills (e.g. toileting, eating) and their gross and fine motor skills.  Your child’s occupational therapist will explain any assessments with you in more detail.

The assessment sessions will be arranged at a time to best suit your child’s needs after discussion with you, the educators and other staff.

All the assessments we use at the centre have been used with young children with autism spectrum disorders in the past and are designed to match their interests and strengths. For example, test materials may include bubbles, balloons, and puzzles. Our staff have found that most children enjoy the kinds of games and activities included in these assessments.
