Richie Porte calls on cyclists of all abilities to tackle the Balfour Burn

Tasmania’s most successful road cyclist Richie Porte took time out from his summer training block to tackle the route used for the Balfour Burn.

Launceston’s own Richie Porte

Before heading back to Europe and his final season on the world tour, the Ineos Grenadiers rider was keen to call on cyclists of all abilities to join the 420-metre-long course with it’s steep maximum gradient of 25%.

“We actually race some roads in the Giro, and even in the Tour now, that are steeper than this, but there’s normally switchbacks” Porte said.

“When it’s that steep, it’s not so much a race as a death march to the top (laughs)”

The 2022 event is set to take place on Sunday March 20th, with categories for cyclists sitting along side running, walking, pram and pet friendly events.

Although Porte will be back in Europe for the 2022 event, there is hope of seeing him tackle a Balfour Burn event in the future.

“I’d love to come back and tackle it one day, it might not be on my bike though…”
